(WASHINGTON) – The United States has announced it will purchase Russian diesel and remove sanctions on those products, a move critics describe as a strategic blunder and moral failure.
The decision, announced by US President Donald Trump, would allow Russia to sell diesel onto the global market. The stated aim is to lower fuel prices for American consumers.
However, analysts note that the amount involved is minuscule. Even if the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin meets the demand, it amounts to just a few hours worth of diesel consumption in the United States. The impact on prices would be negligible.
Russia currently has an export ban on diesel due to limited domestic supply. Immediately after the announcement, Russia reduced that ban to take advantage of the situation. However, it remains unclear whether Russia can meet the obligation.
