(EASTERN FRONT, UKRAINE) – Ukrainian forces have destroyed a significant stockpile of BM-21 Grad rockets, triggering a massive secondary detonation, according to footage released on 21st August 2026. The strike also reportedly destroyed a BM-21 Grad multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) used to fire the 122mm munitions.
The video, shared by open-source intelligence analyst Suchomimus, shows a sustained “cook-off” of the rocket stockpile, with munitions igniting and firing erratically across the area. Analysts suggest the depot was located after Ukrainian forces tracked a Grad launcher that had just discharged its payload and was returning to the site to rearm.
The fate of the launcher itself at the depot remains unclear, though a separate, unlocated video from the same period shows another Ukrainian drone strike obliterating an abandoned Grad launcher parked on a roadside. The force of the explosion in that footage suggested the vehicle was carrying a full load of rockets at the time. The launcher appeared to be unoccupied, possibly having been previously damaged or abandoned.
The strikes highlight Ukraine’s ongoing strategy of targeting Russian logistics and artillery assets far from the immediate front lines. The destruction of ammunition supplies is critical to degrading the combat capability of Russian forces, which rely heavily on artillery barrages.
According to the open-source tracking project Oryx, at least 367 Russian Grad systems have been visually confirmed destroyed since the full-scale invasion. However, analysts believe the true figure is considerably higher due to lapses in documentation. Russia possessed an estimated 650 operational Grad systems before the invasion, with an additional 700 officially listed in storage. The actual serviceability of those stored systems is questionable, with many believed to be in a state of disrepair.
The BM-21 Grad is a 122mm MLRS known for its destructive power, but its relatively short range makes it vulnerable to counter-battery fire and, increasingly, to attacks by Ukrainian first-person view (FPV) drones.
