(MOSCOW, RUSSIA) – Russian state television is promoting a narrative that a recent series of destructive warehouse fires across the country are fictitious, claiming the video evidence showing the blazes and their aftermath is the product of Ukrainian actors and artificial intelligence.
The claims come as Russian social media has been inundated with videos from distressed entrepreneurs who report losing their entire stock and life savings in fires at major logistics hubs. In these clips, business owners are seen weeping and expressing anger at the marketplaces, accusing them of refusing compensation and telling them to “take a long walk.”
In response to this wave of discontent, pundits on Russia’s primary federal channel offered a simple solution to the affected vendors: the events never happened. Speaking with an air of authority, they asserted that the hundreds of complaint videos were either generated by “insidious artificial intelligence” or were professionally filmed on a sound stage in Kyiv using actors. This approach allows Russian television to simply declare reality fake when it becomes inconvenient for the Kremlin’s narrative.
This attempt to erase a domestic crisis follows a series of other severe legal actions within Russia. In Moscow, an appeals court upheld a 15 year prison sentence for a 70 year old Ukrainian woman from occupied Tokmak. She was convicted of treason for making 24 donations to support the Ukrainian armed forces, a decision that highlights the brutal reality for citizens in Russian occupied territories.
In another case underscoring the country’s judicial climate, authorities near Tula accused a 14 year old girl of vandalism for drawing with chalk on a playground. Despite public support for the child, officials forced her to wash away her drawing in front of state television cameras.
