(SAMARA AND ORENBURG OBLASTS, RUSSIA; ARKHANGELSK OBLAST, RUSSIA) – Ukraine’s Defence Ministry has confirmed the destruction of two Ozon logistics hubs in Russia’s Samara and Orenburg regions, as well as a major military spaceport in the Arkhangelsk region, in a series of long range drone strikes.
Ozon is Russia’s second largest online marketplace, controlling approximately 28 percent of the internet retail market, compared to Wildberries’ 47 percent. The destruction of these logistics hubs is expected to severely disrupt Russian e-commerce and reduce tax revenues flowing to the Russian budget.
The strike on the Samara region destroyed a hub described as the largest in the area, with 13,500 square metres of warehouse space lost. Another significant hub was destroyed in Orenburg.
The attacks follow weeks of Ukrainian strikes against Wildberries, Russia’s largest marketplace. The Kremlin and company executives failed to protect the remaining Wildberries hubs, and Ozon’s attempts to develop mobile air defence groups proved equally ineffective.
The Ukrainian strikes also hit Russia’s largest military spaceport in the Arkhangelsk region, located 1,900 kilometres from the Ukrainian border. The facility is used for testing Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missiles and for launching Soyuz rockets that place Russian satellites into orbit.
Russia is working on a project called Rassvet, intended to substitute for the Starlink satellite network. Ukrainian officials view this project as a threat, as it could provide Russia with hundreds of spy satellites.
“By destroying such sites, we actually make this planet and space a safer place,” said Anna Danylchuk, a Ukrainian commentator.
