(KURAKHOVE, DONETSK OBLAST) – Footage has emerged showing Chinese nationals serving within Russian army units on the front line in eastern Ukraine.
The first video, geolocated to Kurakhove in Donetsk Oblast, shows a man identified as a Chinese national wearing Russian military uniform. The footage was recorded near the front line in an area Russia captured approximately one week earlier.
In the recording, the individual points to two black soldiers behind him and reportedly mentions that one is Ethiopian. He states that he is still alive, a claim that observers note may attract drone strikes.
Analysis suggests the man is most likely a Chinese citizen living in Russia who joined the Russian army, or a mercenary. The footage does not indicate that Beijing has deployed troops to support Moscow. He appears to be part of a foreign mercenary group attached to Russian infantry, possibly having travelled from China specifically for the war or being a Chinese civilian resident in Russia.
He is not the first Chinese national documented fighting on Russia’s side during the conflict.
A second video shows another Chinese national who appears to have changed his position after reaching the front. The man, who previously expressed willingness to be used first in battle, is now appealing to Chinese social media users for help returning home after catching a cold.
The second video’s location is unconfirmed but is described as somewhere cold and miserable. The soldier complains of freezing conditions and being pursued by drones.
The first individual is operating near Kurakhove, one of the key contested areas on the eastern front. According to DeepState mapping, Russian forces captured the settlement approximately one week ago.
The footage was shared by military analyst channel Suchomimus.
