Syzran Refinery Burns After Long Range Ukrainian Strike

(SAMARA OBLAST) – Ukrainian drones have struck the Syzran oil refinery in Russia’s Samara Oblast, causing a significant fire and sending thick black smoke columns into the sky. The facility, which has been targeted multiple times in the past, is a key supplier of gasoline, diesel and aviation kerosene to the Russian armed forces, notably the Russian air force.

According to footage released by the Suchomimus channel, the extent of the damage remains difficult to assess with certainty. Emergency flares shot up by the refinery during the attack can blend in with fire and impact marks. However, two thick black smoke columns are visible, indicating impacts. Some fires appear too intense to be solely flares, suggesting a combination of flares and strike damage.

A Google map view of the Syzran oil refinery confirms it is a massive facility. While the quality of the imagery does not allow for precise identification of the impact point, earlier reports suggest oil tanks were hit rather than the processing unit and processing towers. The refinery is a midsize facility with a processing capacity of 7 million tons per year, accounting for 3 percent of Russia’s total oil refining capacity. This strategic importance explains why Ukraine has targeted it so frequently.
