(SEREDNIE, DONETSK OBLAST) – Ukraine has liberated the settlement of Serednie as part of Operation Vivaldi, marking the fifth small settlement recaptured in this counterattack.
The operation, confirmed on 15th September 2026, aims to allow Ukrainian troops to advance to more advantageous defensive positions. By the time of confirmation, 75 kilometres of territory had already been cleared, according to Ukrainian officials.
Ukraine has reported using electronic warfare devices to significant effect, with over 20,000 Russian drones jammed. It remains unclear whether this involves new jamming technology or existing systems already known to be in Ukraine’s arsenal.
The Kraken group has been responsible for disrupting Russian logistics in the area, targeting fuel, ammunition and equipment supplies, which has contributed to the operation’s success.
Ukraine released graphic footage showing the operation’s progress and territorial gains.
Serednie’s location offers limited natural defensive advantages when viewed on deep state mapping, aside from a narrow river on the eastern side serving as a potential barrier. However, terrain analysis via Google Maps reveals high ground to the south and east, which Ukraine aims to secure.
The area lies north of Lyman, a city Russia previously controlled before Ukraine liberated it. Russia now seeks to recapture Lyman but has made limited progress, advancing slowly on the eastern side. The terrain south of Lyman features numerous ponds, rivers and waterways, making attacks from that direction difficult.
The operation is intended to safeguard Lyman against future Russian assaults.
Footage of the operation was released by Ukrainian military sources. The engagement occurred near Serednie, Donetsk Oblast.
