(LUHANSK OBLAST, UKRAINE) – A Ukrainian drone strike has destroyed a Russian BM-27 Uragan multiple launch rocket system and a second vehicle in a rare ammunition cookoff incident, according to footage analysed by military commentators.
The video shows the BM-27 being struck by a drone, triggering a rocket cookoff that sent a projectile into a vehicle positioned in front of the launcher.
The incident occurred in Luhansk Oblast and marks the first confirmed case of a Russian rocket cookoff destroying another Russian vehicle.
The destroyed vehicle is believed to be either a towing vehicle recovering the Uragan after a breakdown, an escort vehicle, or possibly a reloader.
Military analyst Suchomimus said the vehicle appears too small to be a reloader and was most likely a recovery vehicle attending to the Uragan.
The BM-27 Uragan is a 220 millimetre multiple launch rocket system from the 1970s. It has a standard range of 35 kilometres.
The system is known to be inaccurate but highly destructive, similar to other Soviet era rocket systems such as the Grad.
According to open source tracking, 105 BM-27 Uragan systems have been confirmed destroyed during the war, though the true number is likely higher as not every loss is documented.
Russia had 175 of these systems officially in service before the war, with more than 500 additional units in storage.
However, as is often the case with Russian vehicles in storage, many would not be suitable for operations due to poor maintenance and cannibalisation for parts.
