(BUENOS AIRES) – Argentina captain Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 39, ending a career that included World Cup glory in Qatar in 2022 and 125 goals in 207 appearances.
In a statement posted on Instagram, Messi said the decision “hurt” him but that “the time has come.”
“After much thought I want to announce to everyone that I’m retiring from the national team. It’s a decision that hurts to my core. I understand it’s the right time. I always gave it my all,” Messi wrote.
The announcement comes weeks after Messi said he did not know how he could continue playing following the death of his father, who was unable to travel to the United States to see him play in what became his sixth and final World Cup finals. Argentina reached the final but were beaten by Spain.
“I’ve given everything I have. I have nothing more to give and besides there are some great young players coming up behind me who deserve to be there,” Messi said.
He thanked his family and teammates, adding: “The pleasure of sharing this experience with all of you. I’m going to take with me some unforgettable memories and moments.”
Messi remains the country’s all-time leading scorer and most-capped player. He led Argentina to victory at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, ending a wait of more than 20 years for the nation to become world champions again. He also won two Copa América titles.
His international career spanned 20 years and six World Cup tournaments.
Messi continues to play club football for Inter Miami and scored four goals in his most recent match within the last 24 hours. However, his statement that “chapters are closing” suggests his next announcement may concern his retirement from football entirely.
