(SOCHI, RUSSIA) – Ukrainian naval drones have struck a Russian military vessel in the port of Sochi, triggering widespread flight cancellations and spreading panic across the Black Sea resort city once regarded as Russia’s premier holiday destination.
The strike targeted a multifunctional military warship docked at Sochi, a city that has now joined Moscow, St Petersburg and Novorossiysk as an active war zone. Ukrainian drone operators, having established control over land and marine corridors to Crimea, have extended their defence zone into Russia’s south.
Sochi once hosted a busy airport, among the busiest in Russia’s south, serving as both a port and a resort. The Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has abandoned his residence near the city, and few Russians now risk visiting.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy issued a warning to Russian civilians, and hundreds of flights have already been cancelled across the Russian Federation, including in Moscow, St Petersburg and Sochi. In Sochi, residents had additional reasons for disruption.
Ukrainian marine drones, designed as uncrewed surface vessels, carried out the operation against the Russian warship. The attack follows a pattern of Ukrainian strikes on Russian naval assets that have already forced the remnants of the Black Sea Fleet to relocate from occupied Crimea to Novorossiysk.
Ukraine has now demonstrated the capacity to reach Russian warships and export terminals in the Baltic Sea as well. Russian military commentators have expressed alarm that after the effective destruction of Russia’s Black Sea naval capabilities, Ukraine continues to extend its reach.
The strike comes as Russia prepares for State Duma elections in September. The Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has barred the anti-war Yabloko party from participating, removing the only registered opposition force that sought to contest the vote.
Kyiv residents have reported hearing Ukrainian interceptor drones in operation during Russian air raids, a sound described as similar to an aircraft but smaller. The development reflects the rapid evolution of drone warfare across air, sea and land domains.
Ukrainian forces are pressing on with operations as Russian passivity grows. Western military analysts have observed that the conflict bears little resemblance to the Second World War or campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq, with unmanned systems now dominating the battlespace.
Russia’s ability to support allied dictatorships has also diminished. Moscow has failed to provide meaningful backing to Syria, Iran and other partners in recent months.
The Ukrainian government has maintained that the war will continue to return to Russian territory until Russian citizens reconsider their support for the special military operation.
The operation was confirmed by Ukraine’s naval drone units.
