(ANAPA, KRASNODAR KRAI) – Satellite imagery has confirmed the destruction of a Russian Su-33 carrier-based fighter jet at Anapa Air Base, with the wreckage being cleared by an excavator, as Ukrainian forces may have struck two additional aircraft in the same attack.
The satellite image, shared on 10th September 2026, shows the remains of the destroyed Su-33 being cleared. The aircraft was hit on 9th September 2026 at Anapa Air Base. The Su-33 is a rare aircraft, a carrier-based version of the Su-27. Only 24 were built, and at the start of the full scale invasion only 18 remained in service. This is the second Su-33 destroyed in recent weeks and only the second destroyed in the entire war. Two down, 16 to go.
The Su-33 is operated by the Russian Navy, but since Russia’s only aircraft carrier has been plagued by mechanical failures and fires, the aircraft now operate from static air bases, which have also proven vulnerable to Ukrainian attacks. The low number of remaining airframes has led to the aircraft being described as critically endangered.
Telegram reports indicate that in the same strike on 9th September 2026, a Mi-8 helicopter was also destroyed and a Su-30 may have been heavily damaged. The Mi-8 destroyed was tail number 84 of the 318th Mixed Aviation Regiment, and the Su-30 was tail number 41. The satellite imagery shows the Su-33 is beyond heavily damaged, reduced to a pile of scrap with only a wing remaining. If confirmed, this would mean three aircraft destroyed at the air base.
