(AKHTUBINSK, ASTRAKHAN OBLAST, RUSSIA) – Satellite imagery has confirmed damage to a Russian Su-34 fighter jet at Akhtubinsk air base following a drone strike, according to analysis published on 21st August 2026.
The imagery shows extensive fuel leakage around the aircraft, which spread to nearby grassland and caused a significant fire. The bulk of the burning fuel spread away from the jet itself, limiting direct damage to the aircraft.
Analysis suggests the drone impacted near the Su-34 rather than scoring a direct hit. The blast and shrapnel from the nearby explosion appeared to have torn open the jet’s fuel tank, causing the leak that subsequently ignited. The Su-34 is assessed as damaged but not destroyed.
Repairing the aircraft will be difficult for Russia due to international sanctions and restricted access to replacement parts. The incident highlights the vulnerability of Russian military aircraft even at major air bases.
The damaged Su-34 was located near what appears to be the base’s repair and maintenance depot. Ukraine has previously targeted Russian aircraft undergoing maintenance, as stationary jets cannot be scrambled and are more vulnerable to successful strikes.
Akhtubinsk air base is part of Russia’s aviation research and testing centre, where test flights of new aircraft are conducted. The Su-57 and Su-70 stealth drone have previously been stationed at the facility. The base has been attacked before, with a Su-57 damaged in a prior strike.
The base is also used to fly bomber aircraft, including Su-34 jets, for operations against Ukraine. Russia had between 120 and 140 Su-34 aircraft in service at the start of the full scale invasion. Over 40 have been destroyed, though the type remains in production. The exact current number in service is unknown.
The Su-34 is an important asset for Russian forces, frequently used to launch glide bombs at Ukrainian positions.
