(KYIV, UKRAINE) – A series of unprecedented engagements in the Black Sea and along the front lines has seen the balance of power shift dramatically, with Ukrainian forces destroying high-value Russian military assets, including combat helicopters and fighter jets, using innovative and asymmetrical tactics.
In a world first, a Ukrainian Magura V5 naval drone has shot down a Russian Mi-8 combat helicopter. The engagement began when a Russian pilot spotted the drone 8 kilometres away. The pilot initiated close-quarters combat, firing a 30mm cannon.
However, the Ukrainian operator executed a hard defensive manoeuvre, evading the burst of fire. A second naval drone then appeared on the helicopter’s radar, creating a momentary distraction. This allowed the Magura V5, equipped with surface-launched missiles, to acquire a lock and fire. Seconds later, the Russian helicopter plunged into the sea, marking the first time in history a naval drone has destroyed a manned helicopter in combat.
This milestone follows a string of losses for the Russian military. In a separate incident, a Russian Su-25 jet was shot down by a Ukrainian soldier using a Javelin missile. The single shot, costing approximately $80,000 (£63,000), tore the aircraft apart. The Ukrainian soldiers on the ground were elated as the jet erupted in a massive explosion upon impact.
A subsequent rescue mission for the downed Russian pilot ended in catastrophe for the Kremlin’s forces. Two search helicopters, a Mi-8 and a Ka-52, were dispatched. Ukrainian forces anticipated the recovery team, mobilising a Javelin crew and drone swarm. A Javelin targeting the Ka-52 missed, but the Mi-8 landed and deployed its recovery team. Ukrainian drones then came under effective Russian electronic warfare, with signals cutting to static. The Ka-52 withdrew, abandoning the ground team. An Mi-8, valued at $10 million (£7.8 million), was then destroyed midair by a drone using remote detonation after repeated attacks. The rescue operation ended with no one left to rescue and no one left to do the rescuing.
Ukraine has also achieved another world first. Three Russian Ka-52 Alligator attack helicopters, each valued at $15 million (£11.8 million), lifted off for a strike mission. Ukrainian intelligence had already compromised their flight path. Deploying fibre-optic drones, which emit nothing across the electromagnetic spectrum, Ukrainian forces bypassed the helicopters’ Vitebsk defence systems. The drone operator, seeing the first helicopter, waited for the next to appear and struck it dead on. The Ka-52 fell from the sky in flames. A second helicopter was also damaged, forcing an emergency landing before being finished off by Ukrainian strike drones.
In a high-risk operation in March 2026, Ukrainian special services targeted the Sivash drilling rig in the Black Sea. The operation was nearly derailed by the appearance of a Ka-27 anti-submarine warfare helicopter, a platform designed to hunt low-signature surface targets. With no time to wait, Ukrainian forces launched several Sea Baby naval drones alongside a long-range FP-2 strike drone. The Ka-27 was eliminated before its search radar could detect the approaching drones. The Sea Baby then moved in, delivering blow after blow until the rig was completely knocked out.
