(NOVOROSSIYSK, KRASNODAR KRAI) – Satellite imagery has confirmed significant damage to multiple Russian Black Sea Fleet vessels following a large scale Ukrainian drone and missile attack on Novorossiysk harbour.
The Project 22160 patrol ship Vasily Bykov appears to have sustained catastrophic damage, with a direct strike on the vessel’s superstructure destroying radar installations and air defence systems. The ship’s main gun was completely blown off in what analysts described as a rare “ship turret toss,” indicating possible detonation of ammunition stores. The helicopter landing pad also suffered minor damage from a separate drone strike.
Military analysts suggest the Vasily Bykov may be beyond repair for the duration of the conflict, noting Russia’s demonstrated difficulties in repairing warships. The Ivan Khurs, struck by a Storm Shadow missile in 2023, has reportedly not left harbour since. The Yamal and a pair of Ropucha class landing ships damaged in the same attack have similarly remained inactive.
The Vasily Bykov’s loss leaves Russia with only two operational Project 22160 patrol ships in the Black Sea, vessels previously used for escort duties, pipeline patrol and protection of the Kerch Bridge.
Satellite imagery also confirmed a Kilo class submarine sustained a direct hit on its side near the conning tower, likely damaging the control room or crew quarters. While the submarine may remain operational for surface missile launches, analysts believe it can no longer safely submerge due to hull integrity concerns.
The Admiral Makarov frigate, an Admiral Grigorovich class vessel, was struck by a drone at the rear, destroying two critical radar systems including the MR252 cross dome radar used for air and surface search and the 3R14N Centauro fire control system essential for launching Kalibr cruise missiles. Oil leakage was observed near the vessel’s bow, with the ship appearing to sit lower in the water.
Ukraine also reported damage to a Buyan-M corvette, though satellite confirmation has not yet emerged.
The attack also struck Novorossiysk’s grain terminal, with at least four confirmed impacts on various structures. A conveyor bridge carrying grain to the export terminal collapsed onto railway tracks, rendering the facility inoperative until extensive repairs are completed.
Near misses were recorded against a second Kilo class submarine, a Project 226M minesweeper and a crane ship.
Analysts note the destruction of the Makarov’s Kalibr launch capabilities will reduce Russia’s capacity to strike Ukrainian civilian infrastructure. Russia has frequently employed Kalibr missiles against Ukrainian cities, schools, train stations and residential areas.
The footage was released by the Suchomimus monitoring channel using satellite imagery from commercial providers.
