(PERM, RUSSIA) – Ukrainian Defence Forces have struck a major oil refinery in the Russian city of Perm, approximately 1,600 kilometres from the front line, in an overnight drone operation that caused significant damage to the facility.
The strike on the Perm refinery was confirmed by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on 21st August 2026, who published video footage showing the aftermath of the attack. The facility is one of Russia’s largest oil processing plants and plays a critical role in supplying fuel to the Russian military.
The operation was part of a broader series of overnight strikes targeting Russian military and industrial infrastructure. In addition to the Perm refinery, Ukrainian forces struck the “Marinovka” military airfield, also located deep inside Russian territory.
At the Akhtubinsk airfield, approximately 600 kilometres from the line of contact, a Russian Su-34 fighter bomber was damaged. The aircraft had been used to conduct airstrikes against Ukrainian targets.
Closer to the front line, Ukrainian forces severely damaged a facility in Primorsko-Akhtarsk, roughly 180 kilometres from the contact line. The site was used for storing, preparing and launching attack drones employed against Ukrainian civilians nearly every night.
“We continue to use our long range strikes to return the consequences of the war to where it came from,” Zelenskyy stated, thanking the military personnel involved in the operations.
The Perm refinery strike represents one of the deepest Ukrainian attacks on Russian energy infrastructure since the full scale invasion began. The facility processes millions of tonnes of crude oil annually, with much of its output directed towards military logistics.
Finnish President Alexander Stubb has indicated that NATO leaders support Ukraine’s intensified long range strikes on Russian territory, viewing them as a crucial mechanism for pressuring Moscow to return to negotiations.
