(SAINT PETERSBURG, RUSSIA) – A senior Russian military officer has been killed by a car bomb in a suburb of Saint Petersburg, according to Russian media reports. The incident occurred in the Shushary district.
The victim, identified only by his rank as a lieutenant colonel, was killed instantly when an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated as he entered his vehicle. The officer held the seventh highest rank in the Russian armed forces. His wife was also wounded in the blast and has been hospitalised.
The attack took place within a military housing area. The identity of the officer has not yet been officially released by Russian authorities.
This incident follows a pattern of targeted attacks against Russian military personnel and officials, often those accused of war crimes, within Russian territory. Such operations are frequently attributed to Ukrainian intelligence services utilising local proxies. The tactic involves identifying a target, establishing their routines and location, and then tasking an operative to plant a device.
The blast occurred not within the city centre of Saint Petersburg, but in its Shushary suburb, located on the outskirts of the metropolis.
