(HOHENFELS, GERMANY) – Ukrainian drone operators defeated United States Army troops during joint military exercises in Germany earlier this year, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.
The Combined Resolve exercises, held in April and May at the Hohenfels training area in Bavaria, tested the ability of visiting forces to operate and defend against the proliferation of small drones that have become a dominant element of the Russian-Ukrainian war.
Approximately 3,500 American servicemembers took part, mostly from the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team of the 1st Cavalry Division. Their task was to attack positions defended by opposing forces reinforced by Ukrainian soldiers from the 412th Nemesis Regiment of the Unmanned Systems Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
“This kind of training cannot be obtained in the United States,” said Air Force General Alexus Grynkewich, a top military commander of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
He added that after NATO forces conducted joint exercises with Ukrainian troops, “the changes are striking.”
Eliot Cohen, a fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies think tank, noted that recent combat experience shows how important a role drones of all types play in modern warfare.
The exercises focused on lessons from Ukraine’s experience with short range combat drones, which have become a defining feature of the conflict.
