General Who Falsely Claimed Kostiantynivka Capture Killed

(HORLIVKA, DONETSK OBLAST) – A Russian major general has been confirmed killed in action in eastern Ukraine following a Ukrainian drone strike on his location in Horlivka.

Major General Anton Grunis, commander of the 4th Separate Motor Rifle Brigade, was killed in the attack, which was first rumoured yesterday and subsequently confirmed by Russian media sources. Footage of the strike, released today by the Ukrainian military, shows a powerful attack drone completely levelling the building where the general was located.

The drone used in the attack is of an unusual type, featuring a distinctive hood and an appearance likened to an upside-down bat. This model, seen for the first time in use, appears to carry a very heavy warhead, causing significantly more damage than a standard drone. The strike occurred approximately 40 km from the front lines in Horlivka, a city in the Donetsk Oblast.

The general was a key figure in the Russian army, commanding forces in the current battle for Kostiantynivka, a critical area where Russian forces are currently pushing. Grunis was notably the officer who, in July of this year, falsely reported that Russia had captured Kostiantynivka, a settlement that remains heavily contested on the eastern front.

Ukraine’s ability to confirm the general’s presence in Horlivka suggests it possessed solid intelligence, which could have been derived from sources on the ground, clear drone imagery from spotter drones, or communications interceptions. The video of the strike was released by the Ukrainian military.
