(LUHANSK OBLAST, UKRAINE) – A Russian Buk-M2 surface to air missile system was destroyed by a Ukrainian HIMARS strike in Luhansk Oblast, resulting in a significant secondary explosion. Footage of the engagement was released on 5th September 2026.
The video shows a Ukrainian spotter drone locating the Buk-M2 system concealed within a tree line. The system then launches two missiles, reportedly at a separate target. Moments later, a HIMARS strike impacts the position.
The strike ignites the launcher and triggers a substantial ammunition cookoff. The video indicates the HIMARS rocket arrived shortly after the Buk fired, as white smoke from the missile launch was still visible around the site.
The geolocation places the destroyed system near the settlement of Idan and Barakina, hidden in a tree line. This is within Luhansk Oblast. The Buk-M2 has a maximum range of 50 kilometres. The system was positioned to cover the eastern front towards the north of the area.
According to open source tracking, approximately 160 Buk systems have been confirmed destroyed during the conflict. The true figure is likely higher, with estimates approaching 200, as many strikes have not been independently verified due to a lack of aftermath footage.
Russia had approximately 310 Buk systems in service at the start of the full scale invasion. Production of the Buk-M2 continues, but Russian forces are experiencing a significant shortage of these systems. S-300V anti ballistic missile systems have reportedly been redeployed to medium range air defence roles to compensate for Buk losses.
