Live Virus Found in Russian Dog Vaccine

(YAROSLAVL REGION, RUSSIA) – Live Aujeszky’s disease virus has been detected in samples from the 20th batch of the Russian “Multican-8” dog vaccine. The finding follows earlier reports of dogs dying after being vaccinated with the product.

Laboratory tests conducted by Russia’s Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Supervision confirmed the presence of the live virus. The samples were taken from the Yaroslavl region, which is where the first reports of canine deaths following vaccination with “Multican-8” had emerged.

Aujeszky’s disease, also known as pseudorabies, is an acute viral infection that affects both domestic and wild animals. It targets the central nervous system and is frequently fatal in many susceptible species. The detection of the live virus in the vaccine occurred amid these reports of fatal outcomes in dogs.

The Russian state news agency TASS reported on the results of the study, which were also covered by the Ukrainian news agency UNN.
