(KURSK OBLAST) – Ukrainian drones have destroyed a Russian BM-21 Grad multiple launch rocket system and its accompanying ammunition stockpile in Kursk Oblast, according to footage shared on 8th September.
The video shows the Grad already on fire as the first drone passes, indicating it had been struck previously. A second drone then locates a hidden ammunition stockpile within a tree line and destroys it, triggering a large secondary explosion. Analysts estimate that up to 100 rockets may have been present at the site at the time of the strike.
The Grad’s launcher was not in a firing position when it was destroyed. Military observers suggest the vehicle was at a hiding spot used for reloading before moving to a firing point elsewhere. Ukrainian forces appear to have tracked the vehicle to its concealed location and struck as it was preparing to leave.
Additional spotter drone footage captured the aftermath of the strike. One drone filmed close range footage of the ammunition detonating, while a second, positioned further away, recorded the fireball rising over the forest.
The geolocation of the strike places it in Kursk Oblast near the settlement of Bakoba, hidden within tree lines. The destroyed Grad was likely supporting Russian operations attempting to create a buffer zone along the border.
According to open source tracking, Russia had approximately 650 Grad systems in service at the start of the conflict. Analysts have documented 368 destroyed so far, though the true figure is believed to be higher as not every loss is recorded. The BM-21 Grad is a 122mm multiple launch rocket system.
