(WASHINGTON) – The United States Secret Service has confirmed it is aware of an Iranian state television broadcast that appeared to threaten the life of Barron Trump, the youngest son of President Donald Trump.
The video, aired by Iran’s state broadcaster, displayed a ten million dollar ($10,000,000 / £7,600,000 / €9,000,000) bounty on the 20 year old and reportedly showed locations where he is known to spend time. The Secret Service declined further comment citing security concerns.
This marks the first time Barron Trump has been publicly singled out. Hard-line Iranian media have repeatedly featured content threatening President Trump and his family following the assassination of former supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several family members at the outset of the US-Israeli war with Iran in February.
Former CIA Director Leon Panetta described the threat as “crazy” and warned that any attempt would “result without question an all out war.” He stressed that the United States must take such threats seriously given Iran’s history of targeting individuals within America.
Panetta also criticised Washington’s sanctions strategy against Iran, noting that without cooperation from China and other major trading partners, the economic isolation approach would prove “hollow.”
The former defence secretary further questioned whether Russia would support US efforts, stating that the “axis” of Russia, China, North Korea and Iran remains “very tight.”
