(NOVOROSSIYSK, KRASNODAR KRAI) – Ukrainian forces have struck the Russian Black Sea port of Novorossiysk, damaging four warships and disabling a significant portion of the port’s grain export infrastructure in a sustained overnight attack.
Satellite imagery confirmed damage to four vessels belonging to the Russian Black Sea Fleet. Three of the ships are Kalibr cruise missile carriers, which have been used to launch strikes against Ukrainian cities. The vessels included Admiral Grigorovich class frigates Admiral Makarov and Admiral Essen, a Buyan M class corvette, and the Vasily Bykov patrol ship.
Analysis of the damage indicates the warships were not destroyed or sunk. Instead, they sustained damage to specific systems, including main guns, satellite communications equipment, and exhaust systems. The vessels will require repairs before returning to active service.
The primary target of the operation appears to have been the port’s grain export capacity. Novorossiysk handles over 90 percent of Russian grain exports through the Black Sea. At least ten of the port’s grain silos were struck with precision, leaving holes in the storage infrastructure.
Local residents reported the attack lasted approximately eight hours, from late evening until dawn. Russian air defence units responded with sustained small arms and heavy machine gun fire directed at the drones. This response resulted in widespread damage to civilian property across the city, including vehicles and residential buildings.
Russian authorities claimed Ukrainian drones were equipped with heavy machine guns that fired indiscriminately at the city. However, footage from the scene indicates the damage to civilian infrastructure was caused by falling ammunition from Russian air defence fire.
A Russian military blogger known as “The Thirteenth” described the cumulative effect of Ukrainian maritime strikes as a “disaster” for Russian logistics. He noted that over 200 ships have been damaged in the Sea of Azov and Black Sea since July. He described Crimea as becoming “a suitcase without a handle”, referring to the peninsula’s increasing logistical burden for Russian forces.
The attack on Novorossiysk is the latest in a series of Ukrainian operations targeting Russian maritime logistics and military infrastructure. The port serves as a major hub for both civilian exports and naval operations following the degradation of Russian facilities in occupied Sevastopol.
