(COPENHAGEN, DENMARK) – A Danish company has developed a low cost underwater drone specifically for Ukraine, designed to strike Russian ships and coastal infrastructure. The Shadowfin maritime drone carries a 300 kg warhead and costs approximately €50,000 (roughly $54,000 or £43,000), making it cheaper than a single Russian Shahed drone.
The Shadowfin, developed by Søens Tech, is seven metres long with a diameter of 50 centimetres and a total weight of approximately 1.5 tonnes. It is equipped with a mast featuring a GPS antenna and cameras, on which additional sensors can be installed.
Defense Express reported that the drone’s low price was achieved through simple design. The hull is made from a standard 500 mm fibreglass pipe. Other unmanned boats and underwater maritime drones typically cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The manufacturer lists enemy ships, ports, bridges, maritime terminals and other coastal infrastructure facilities among Shadowfin’s potential targets.
The drone is currently undergoing testing in Danish waters. Once testing is complete, the company plans to transfer the first unit to Ukraine for field trials.
