(MOSCOW) – Russian state television has openly discussed launching a nuclear strike against the Baltic states in an attempt to intimidate Europe. The comments were made on the programme “One’s Own Truth” hosted by Roman Babayan on 31st August 2026.
The panellists suggested such a strike would be a way to force Europe to take Russian nuclear threats seriously. A guest on the show argued that Europe does not believe Russia would use nuclear weapons. He stated the only way to prove it might be to use one. “Maybe a strike on someone to begin with,” he said. “Well, let’s say, on the shores of the Baltic, on the Baltics, that’s it, you can’t rewind it back.”
The discussion focused on what Moscow perceives as the growing threat of a direct war with Europe. Host Roman Babayan claimed Britain would be a legitimate target. “Great Britain will answer for the deaths of our peaceful citizens,” Babayan said. “When our missiles fly at English military targets…” He also questioned what should be done about Starlink satellites, which he accused of “spying in our sky.”
The panellists expressed a shared belief that the United States, under Donald Trump, would not defend its European allies in the event of a conflict. This perceived lack of American support was seen as an opportunity to escalate pressure on Europe. The panel agreed that the goal was to make Europe and Ukraine afraid. “That is our task: to make them finally understand and become afraid,” one speaker said. “We must work to make them afraid. And where force is needed, of course, it should be used.”
A further unsubstantiated claim was made during the broadcast that Russia launched its full scale invasion of Ukraine to pre-empt a Ukrainian offensive. Anton Kobekov, an advisor to the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, claimed documents found in an abandoned Ukrainian headquarters proved Ukraine planned to invade Russia on 8th March 2022. The panel did not provide any evidence for this claim.
The video of the programme was published by the Russian Media Monitor project, run by journalist Julia Davis.
