(LONDON) – Britain and France have discussed establishing local assembly lines in Ukraine for SCALP long range cruise missiles, a move that could significantly expand Kyiv’s domestic weapons production capacity. The talks were confirmed by the Office of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom following a meeting at Downing Street.
The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and French President Emmanuel Macron discussed the next steps toward localising assembly of SCALP missiles, which incorporate British technology. No timelines or production volumes were specified.
During the talks, both sides focused separately on support for Ukraine. The leaders discussed further work on localising SCALP missile assembly directly in Ukraine and also referenced the Coalition of the Willing meeting held in Kyiv last week.
SCALP missiles are long range cruise missiles that Ukraine is already using in the war against Russia. The British government’s statement did not provide details on when assembly lines might become operational or the scale of future output.
Beyond Ukraine, the leaders discussed combating illegal migration across the English Channel, the United Kingdom’s relations with Europe, and the possible consequences of Europe’s “Made in Europe” policy for British industry.
The two sides also addressed the situation in the Middle East, the need for de-escalation in the Strait of Hormuz, and Israel’s actions regarding the E1 settlement, which the British prime minister described as unacceptable.
Ukraine previously received permission from Britain and France to produce SCALP missiles, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
