(YAMAL, SIBERIA) – A long-range Ukrainian drone strike has targeted a minor gas production facility in the Yamal region of western Siberia, approximately 50 kilometres from a critical energy hub known as the Yamal Cross. The operation, which saw drones travel some 3,000 kilometres from the Ukrainian border, marks a new record for deep strikes into Russian territory and has reportedly caused significant concern among Russian military and energy analysts.
The Yamal Cross is a strategic location where 17 major gas pipelines intersect. According to analysis of the event, a successful strike on this single junction could immediately halt 85 percent of Russia’s gas production. The loss of this production would have severe economic and infrastructural consequences for the Russian Federation, which is already experiencing a fuel deficit and problems with its oil industry.
The majority of Russia’s electric and heating stations, including those in Moscow and St Petersburg, are dependent on energy resources developed in this region. A disruption at the Yamal Cross would therefore threaten a widespread energy collapse across the European part of Russia, affecting both civilian infrastructure and key decision-making centres for the Kremlin.
Rebuilding such a facility would be exceptionally difficult. The location is in a zone of permafrost, where the frozen ground makes construction and excavation incredibly challenging. The original infrastructure was built during the Soviet era, when the state had access to vast resources and forced labour. Replicating this feat under current economic constraints, with Russia’s federal budget deficit reportedly at 8 trillion roubles (approximately $87 billion or £68 billion), is considered highly unlikely.
Furthermore, the by-products of gas production are used to manufacture ammonia and other liquids essential for producing explosives and missiles. A halt in production would therefore also damage Russia’s weapon manufacturing capacity and its related logistics.
The recent strike targeted a facility 50 kilometres away from the main Yamal Cross. This event follows a pattern of increasingly deep Ukrainian strikes, including one on the Kante Manisk region, a key oil-producing area 2,500 kilometres away. These operations appear designed to exploit Russia’s overstretched air defences, which are unable to protect the country’s vast territory while remaining concentrated around key strategic locations.
