(STELLENBOSCH, SOUTH AFRICA) – South Africa national team midfielder Jayden Adams has died at the age of 25, just two weeks after representing his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The South African Football Association confirmed the death in a statement that paid tribute to the player’s talent and character.
The association said death had cruelly taken one of their own and deprived the country of an outstanding footballer. It added that Adams’ legacy would endure and that he would be remembered for his humility, his extraordinary ability and the pride with which he wore the national shirt. The statement concluded with a message of eternal peace.
The official cause of death has not been made public. However, sources cited by the South African publication Sunday World said Adams took his own life at his home in Stellenbosch on Saturday morning. The reports indicate that the young midfielder had recently been mourning the loss of his grandmother, Marianne Adams, who died at the age of 72 one day before South Africa’s World Cup match against the Czech Republic.
Adams had been part of the South Africa squad that competed at the 2026 World Cup, a tournament co hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States. South Africa’s campaign ended in the Round of 32 with a defeat against Canada, who became the first team to advance to the Round of 16.
The death of a current international at such a young age has shocked South African football and the wider sporting community. Messages of condolence have been shared by teammates, former players and supporters. Adams had been regarded as one of the promising talents in the domestic league and had worked his way into the national team setup through consistent performances at club level.
The South African Football Association has not released further details about funeral arrangements or any plans to honour Adams at upcoming fixtures. The focus in the immediate aftermath of the announcement has been on respecting the privacy of the player’s family and offering support to those closest to him.
