(KYIV) – Russia lost over 50,000 soldiers in September 2026, the deadliest month of the year and potentially the deadliest of the entire war, according to Bloomberg. Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence claims its forces killed, captured, and wounded 46,230 Russian soldiers during the same period.
The increase in casualties coincides with Ukraine’s escalating drone operations and increasingly desperate Russian tactics on the battlefield.
Ukrainian drone strikes on three Yandex data centres over four days have triggered a dramatic collapse in Russian bot traffic across Western social media platforms. Yandex confirmed that its data centre in Vladimir was shut down following the attack.
Network monitors reported a 99 per cent drop in bot traffic, primarily reflecting Yandex’s own web crawlers and indexers going dark. The strikes also critically damaged the backend of low and mid-tier bot farms that spread and amplify pro-Russian propaganda.
The impact on Western political discourse was immediate. Bot traffic across the entire West collapsed, with Reddit data showing the Irish politics subreddit down by 80 per cent.
Engagement with paid Russian propagandists including Scott Ritter fell by 43 per cent on Twitter. Similar declines were recorded for Tucker Carlson’s network and Douglas Macgregor.
Support for the Alternative for Germany party and Reform UK also collapsed following the strikes, according to polling data analysed by Poly Market.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky commented on the development. “When our strikes reached Yandex data centres, it suddenly became a little easier to breathe on many social media platforms,” he said. “There was less hate, less division and fewer provocations because there were fewer BS.”
Technical analysts cautioned that the 99 per cent drop in bot traffic did not mean social media trolls had disappeared entirely. Data centres like the one in Sisovo hosted Yandex’s primary supercomputers, disrupting Yandex GPT and cloud translation APIs that bot farms relied upon for generating mass propaganda.
The automated web crawlers that spread, clone, and rank thousands of fake propaganda sites across the region were completely frozen. However, large-scale state actors such as the GRU rely on foreign proxies and local airgapped language models to avoid this type of infrastructure vulnerability.
The current Yandex outage mainly chokes low to mid-tier automated operations, not Russia’s most sophisticated capabilities.
Yandex Pay partially resumed operations after the strikes, but the temporary outage froze accounts and disrupted daily transactions for millions of Russians. As the tenth most used bank in Russia by daily transactions, Yandex Pay’s failure meant taxi drivers, food delivery workers, and anyone reliant on mobile payments could not work or access their money for several days.
Replacing equipment at the damaged data centres will take approximately six months, according to industry estimates. Fire damage and exposure to the elements have rendered the facilities inoperable. Russia is now reportedly weighing drone defences for its data centres and considering relocating operations to Kazakhstan or Belarus where Ukrainian drones may not reach.
Elon Musk is spending $366 million (£289 million) of his own money to bolster the Republican party ahead of the US midterm elections, according to campaign finance disclosures. Musk, who spent $300 million (£237 million) to elect Donald Trump in 2024, has promoted himself and his causes by relying on Russian bot farms to amplify his reach.
The collapse of these bot networks following Ukraine’s data centre strikes has reportedly upset Musk, who has publicly complained that Zelensky has gone too far.
US President Donald Trump announced an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine that neither side had agreed to or been informed about. “Russia agreed to an energy strike ceasefire because I said they agreed,” Trump stated when questioned about the arrangement.
Hours after Trump’s declaration, Russia struck a Kharkiv thermal power plant as part of over 200 attacks on Ukraine’s grid that week. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated: “President Putin made this very clear. We will continue to achieve the objectives of the special military operation.”
Zelensky responded: “Our offer is honest and clear. We are ready to respect an energy ceasefire if Russia is ready to do the same. We agree if they agree, and we have already shown that we mean it.”
At midnight, a Russian jet powered Shahed drone struck a gas processing facility in Ukraine, confirming that no energy ceasefire was in effect.
The United States is threatening to cut off intelligence sharing and arms shipments to Ukraine to protect Russian oil refineries. The intelligence sharing in question involves early warning of Russian bombers taking off to launch missiles at Ukraine.
The arms shipments affected are weapons that European nations purchase from the United States through the Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List and then deliver to Ukraine. The total value is approximately $6.7 billion (£5.3 billion) to date.
Trump would be losing money and costing the American defence industry revenue for a sham deal with Russia that benefits no one outside Moscow and Miami.
The United States is importing diesel from Russia despite quality concerns, as Russian refineries cut corners and produce fuel that damages engines. Video footage from Russia shows a man complaining about the diesel he just put in his car, which failed to combust properly.
Rather than importing clean and safe diesel from Canada or keeping domestic supply at home to lower prices, Trump would rather purchase toxic sludge from the Russians. Oil prices have risen above $100 (£79) a barrel on average since Trump attacked Iran, with the current price at $106 (£84).
Iranian forces struck six commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday alone. The Riyadh International Airport was bombed, killing multiple people. The Middle East is engulfed in a religiously aligned conflict pitting Sunnis against Shia, with Turkey, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia in a joint defence alliance supporting Yemen against the Houthis, who are allied with Iran.
The Rostov oil terminal has burned for three days following a Ukrainian drone attack. Satellite imagery shows four tanks completely destroyed and another three most likely lost. The Samara pumping station has been struck at least four times, with analysis from Okagora indicating 11 tanks completely destroyed, 11 damaged, and 51 still intact. The facility has been on fire for two weeks.
Ukraine has dedicated recent drone operations to targeting Iskander ballistic missile launch sites and maintenance bases rather than new refineries, attempting to placate Trump while making Russia look unreasonable for rejecting the ceasefire.
The French Navy intercepted the Russian shadow fleet tanker DF Peak in the Indian Ocean, more than 450 nautical miles south of Reunion. President Emmanuel Macron stated: “France is determined to combat the Ghost Fleet wherever it may be in the world.”
Russian attacks killed at least 10 people and injured 69 across Ukraine as Moscow targeted energy infrastructure. A Shahed drone struck a high-rise apartment building in Kyiv, killing two people and injuring nine.
Zelensky stated: “The Russians continue their terror against our people, striking residential buildings and taking lives. This is further proof that Russia must face greater pressure. They are the ones continuing the brutal strikes. They are the ones prolonging the war.”
In Kharkiv, a Russian strike collapsed an apartment stairwell, killing three people. Video footage showed a jet drone slamming into an apartment building, killing a 16-year-old boy on a scooter. Anastasia Paris Gova, whose mother’s nurse lost her only son in the attack, stated: “Nothing left of him. Russians killed him and ripped this woman’s heart out.”
Russia is building jet drones capable of flying 800 kilometres per hour, allocating tens of billions of dollars to produce faster drones that are harder to shoot down. Ukraine is developing countermeasures, with former defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov claiming a new interceptor drone destroyed two Russian Geran-5 jets in its first week of testing.
Poland is investigating an alleged plot to kill Prime Minister Donald Tusk. Tusk stated at a security conference: “Russia wants to dominate Ukraine. And we know it will not stop there. Russia wants to reshape the security architecture in Europe. Let’s call it what it is. Russia wants to destroy the existing security architecture in Europe so that Russia dominance can return to what it was before 1989.”
